Prisoners To Get The Vote!

by swillw @ 2005-04-27 - 11:16:36

There has been debate on a number of radio stations over the last few days on prisoners having the right to vote. According to reports today some prisoners will be voting in the May elections.

I feel that prisoners should be able to vote. They have human rights and they should have a voice despite their crimes. I can understand the reasoning behind the argument that some of the 'evil' prison population do not deserve any human rights. The likes of Myra Hindley a prime example.

Well I''m postal voting this year for the first time. I am split between spoiling my ballot paper or voting liberal democrats. The same people run whichever government gets elected so I'm not sure why I vote at all. Perhaps I feel that one day things may change or perhaps I just get sucked in with the rest of the brain-washed herds.

The conservative campaign makes my blood boil. Their slogan 'Are you thinking what I'm thinking?' really irrates me. Quite frankly Mr Howard I am not thinking what you are thinking. I am thinking 'why don't you take down these stupid posters' and concentrate on some real issues. The latest one that I seen this morning has a picture of Tony Blair with the words 'Another 5 years of this man' Are you thinking what we are thinking? Childish games and a waste of money.

They spend more time attacking each other. It really is pathetic.

I'm not certain what to do either. Tory/Lib Dem or spoiling the ballot. If you do spoil your ballot paper, does it still count that you voted, etc, or do they just throw it away.
Howard is annoying, yes, but I can see the point, five more years of Blair will be bad!

Spoilt ballot papers are counted. If the people who didn't vote spoilt them then the governments would have to sit up and listen.

They are also traced. I have a unique number on my ballot paper so if I spoil it they will know it is me.

A friend of a friend had a letter from their local labour candidate asking why he spoilt his ballot paper last time!!

It's not the anonymous ballot that they pretend. We might as well shout out who we are voting for at the election stations.

couldn't agree more mr Steven, I'm sure there were many innocent domestic animals ~brothers and sisters of mine ~ also killed in the Bhagdad blitz. As regards the art of being polite, ( to your face), Mr Blair & co; my keeper can put it better than me . . .yours CATHEAD

I like that its counted. I really want to be canvassed so I can talk to the politicians involved, but they are to lazy to even do that anymore! Its time for a change from all of those losers and get some proportional representation!

I remember a time when the candidate used to knock on your door and you were free to ask whatever you want. My fiancee wrote a letter to our local MP about problems she had with teaching. he never replied, yet he's send a letter through the door before the elections asking for our support! I don't think so!

So much for the secret vote. If all those people that can't be bothered getting of their arses to vote actually spoiled their ballot paper it would be like a mini revolution. Which is something we need, but that a different story.

Thought about Respect at all? Or how about the Greens, the Scottish Socialist Party (if you're in Scotland), Plaid Cymru (if you're in Wales)...

There are a bunch of other options, and the Lib Dems in coalition with New Labour in Scotland have been just as privatisation-happy as Blair and co.

I think prisoners gave up their right to vote the moment they committed their crime. The whole point of prison is that you don't have freedom... and that includes voting. I think some people may have certain cicumstances where it wasn't fair that they were put away, but is it feasible to make exceptions?
